A Virginia high school student said she was berated in a school-wide email after she picked conservative commentator Candace Owens as her choice for a “black trailblazer” during a school project.
The teenager, a member of the school’s Black Student Union and leader of a Turning Point USA chapter, hailed Owens for her faith and right-wing activism, she told the Daily Wire. Her pick for the Black Student Union assignment reportedly drew condemnation from a fellow student who sent an email to staff, faculty, and other peers at the school, alleging “falsified information” in her presentation that was set to be submitted on Feb. 17.
“I’d like to address some falsified information here … Candace Owens is not someone we should be recognizing today especially during Black History Month when she has done absolutely nothing for the black community. … [Owens] was called a racist because she was,” read the email obtained by the outlet. “Candace Owens openly tried to degrade the struggles of the black community by telling the general public that America is not a racist country and that everyone who believes that it is is trying to divide America.”
The email continued: “I feel as though not only was it disrespectful that you added her to the list of trailblazers, it’s offensive that you sat down, thought about it, researched her, and thought it was okay to do this.”
The email also contained a tweet from Owens about her support of former President Donald Trump.
Just a quick tweet to remind all of you leftists that I have zero shame about having supported @realDonaldTrump for the last 4 years and I stand unapologetically with every patriot in this country.— Candace Owens (@RealCandaceO) January 7, 2021
Your smears have and will continue to inspire me.
I will never be silenced.
The student’s father said he reached out to the school but claimed, “Nothing is being done at all to correct the situation.” The student has since left the school.
“[This] was the icing on the cake. … I just decided it wasn’t best for me to be there anymore and be surrounded by people like that,” the student said. “I didn’t feel threatened, but it’s definitely uncomfortable when you know that [my peers] all feel a certain way about me and don’t like me simply because of my political views.”
The St. Margaret’s School in Virginia did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Washington Examiner at the time of publishing.
Owens, a vocal Trump supporter and critic of Black Lives Matter, was the communications director for the conservative Turning Point USA group from 2017 to 2019. The Daily Wire announced in November that she would be joining the outlet.
